Good News About Housing

Richard Ives

It is easy to find negative news about Michigan and about housing. What you may not know is the good news, and it is significant. For instance, our communities are among the nation’s most affordable. Today, Michigan is aggressively promoting itself with business and industry. With tax incentives for businesses that relocate to Michigan or expand operations that are already here, a well-educated skilled work force, and some of the nation’s most affordable housing, there is much to be optimistic about.

Perhaps the most positive thing that Michigan has to offer is the thing that we all treasure most: Quality of Life.

Three Michigan communities—Farmington, Plymouth Township and Saline—are among Money Magazine’s top 100 places to live in the U.S. Four of the nation’s ten most affordable housing markets are in Michigan, including the Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn area.

Newsweek Magazine takes a different approach to quality of life by ranking secondary education. Twenty-seven schools throughout the state made the list. Such factors are enormously important to employers looking to relocate or expand, and Michigan has a great deal to offer.

Housing markets, like all markets, inevitably have their ups and downs. But as a long-term investment, homeownership remains one of the best investments for individual households with a track record that is virtually unmatched by any other purchase in terms of its real benefits.

Now is an exceptionally good time to shop for a new home. Buyers with good credit, a job and steady income, will find there is plenty of mortgage credit to be had at good rates. And with quite a bit of inventory on the market, home shoppers will find a variety of choices in all price ranges.

I invite you to tour these new homes, built by the Professional Master Builders of the Building Industry Association of Southeastern Michigan, and find the home of your dreams.
